Vidin Oblast on Bulgaria's Northwestern Danube Border
Vidin Oblast is the least populated province in Bulgaria, with roughly 85,000 residents - a figure that has dropped sharply from over 170,000 in the early 1990s due to persistent outmigration and an aging population. The city of Vidin has around 42,000 inhabitants and sits on the Danube directly opposite Calafat in Romania. The Baba Vida fortress, a well-preserved medieval fortification on the Danube bank, is the only entirely intact medieval castle in Bulgaria and dates back to the 10th century with later additions.
The Danube Bridge 2 (New Europe Bridge), opened in 2013 between Vidin and Calafat, was the second fixed crossing over the river between the two countries and improved cross-border connectivity significantly. Before its construction, ferry services were the only link. Belogradchik, roughly 50 kilometres south, is surrounded by the Belogradchik Rocks - fantastically shaped sandstone and limestone formations up to 200 metres high that were a finalist in the New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign. The Belogradchik Fortress, built into the rock formations, adds human history to the geological spectacle.
