Targovishte Oblast in Northeastern Bulgaria
Targovishte Oblast sits in the transitional zone between the Danubian plain and the eastern Balkan foothills, with a population of roughly 112,000. The city of Targovishte has about 38,000 residents. During the Ottoman period, the city served as a garrison town and regional administrative centre. The Alyosha Monument, a Soviet soldier statue on the hill above the city, remains a visible landmark, similar to those found in several other Bulgarian cities.
Popovo, the oblast's second settlement of note, was historically a market town for the surrounding agricultural region. Agriculture remains the primary economic activity across the province, with grain, sunflower, and livestock farming predominant.
