Smolyan Oblast Deep in the Rhodope Mountains
Smolyan Oblast covers the highest part of the Rhodope mountain range in southern Bulgaria, bordering Greece. The province is home to around 105,000 people, making it one of the least populated oblasts. The city of Smolyan, spread across several kilometres along the Cherna River valley at an elevation of roughly 1,000 metres, has about 28,000 residents. It was formed in the 1960s by merging three separate settlements - Smolyan, Raikovo, and Ustovo - giving it an unusually elongated urban layout.
Pamporovo, southeast of Smolyan, is Bulgaria's second most popular ski resort after Bansko. The resort sits at around 1,650 metres on Snezhanka peak and attracts both domestic and international visitors during the winter season. Chepelare, between Pamporovo and Smolyan, has its own smaller ski facilities and claims to have the longest ski run in the Balkans.
The Rhodope region has a distinct cultural identity shaped by its mixed Bulgarian Christian and Pomak (Bulgarian Muslim) population. Traditional architecture in villages like Shiroka Laka features stone houses with wooden balconies. The Rhodopean folk singing tradition, with its haunting polyphonic melodies, has gained international recognition - a recording was included on the Voyager Golden Record sent into space in 1977.
