Sliven Oblast: Blue Rocks and Textile Heritage
Sliven Oblast lies in central-eastern Bulgaria at the junction of the Thracian Lowland and the eastern Balkan range. Around 186,000 people live in the province, with Sliven city home to roughly 89,000. The Sinite Kamani (Blue Rocks) Nature Park rises immediately above the city, named for the bluish tint its quartzite formations take in certain light conditions. A chairlift connects the city to the Karandila area, a recreational zone at around 1,050 metres.
Sliven played an outsized role in Bulgarian industrial history. The first modern textile factory in the Ottoman Balkans was established here in 1834 by Dobri Zhelyazkov Fabrikadzhiyata, and textile production remained the city's defining industry well into the post-communist period. The oblast also has strong associations with the haiduk (rebel/bandit) tradition of resistance against Ottoman rule; Panayot Hitov and Hadzhi Dimitar, celebrated figures in Bulgarian revolutionary history, were both from the Sliven region.
Nova Zagora, in the western part of the oblast, sits in a wine-producing zone and hosts a Thracian-era archaeological site at Karanovo, where a tell settlement mound provides one of the key chronological reference points for southeastern European prehistory. Kotel, in the Balkan mountains, is a traditional crafts town known for handwoven carpets with geometric patterns.
