Ruse Oblast on the Danube
Ruse Oblast occupies the central stretch of Bulgaria's Danube border, with the city of Ruse - the country's fifth-largest - directly across the river from Giurgiu in Romania. The province is home to around 219,000 people. Ruse itself has approximately 142,000 residents and a distinct architectural character: rows of late-19th and early-20th century buildings in European styles earned the city the informal title "Little Vienna." The Friendship Bridge, completed in 1954, was for decades the only fixed crossing over the lower Danube.
The port of Ruse handles river freight and passenger traffic. Industry includes shipbuilding, textiles, and food processing. Byala, south of Ruse, straddles the main E85 road toward Veliko Tarnovo. The Rusenski Lom Nature Park protects a network of river canyons southwest of the city, including the Ivanovo Rock Churches, a UNESCO World Heritage site with 14th-century frescoes.
