Dobrich Oblast: Bulgaria's Northeastern Breadbasket
Dobrich Oblast covers the southernmost section of the Dobrudzha plain, extending to the Black Sea coast in the east and the Romanian border in the north. The population stands at roughly 174,000, with Dobrich city home to about 86,000. Known as Bulgaria's granary, the oblast produces a disproportionate share of the country's wheat, barley, and rapeseed thanks to its deep chernozem soil. Balchik, on the coast, is recognizable for its botanical garden built into the cliffs above the sea - originally part of Queen Marie of Romania's summer palace during the interwar period when the region was under Romanian control.
Kavarna and Shabla occupy the northeastern cape and have become popular stops for birdwatchers due to their position on the Via Pontica migration route. General Toshevo, inland, is an agricultural market town. The coastal towns see increased visitor numbers during summer, though the scale is smaller than in neighbouring Varna Province.
