Burgas Province stretches along the southern portion of Bulgaria's Black Sea coast and extends inland to include parts of the Strandzha mountain range. The population reaches approximately 410,000, with Burgas city itself home to around 202,000 residents, making it the fourth-largest city in Bulgaria. The city sits on a peninsula between Burgas Bay and several coastal lakes - Atanasovsko Lake is a major salt production site and Ramsar-listed wetland where flamingos have been spotted in recent years.
Tourism drives a significant part of the provincial economy. Sunny Beach (Slanchev Bryag), north of Nessebar, is the largest resort complex on the Bulgarian Black Sea and draws millions of visitors annually, predominantly from Germany, Russia, the UK, and Scandinavia. Sozopol and Primorsko serve as smaller, more relaxed alternatives. Nessebar's old town, built on a rocky peninsula, holds dozens of medieval churches and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Strandzha Nature Park in the south, Bulgaria's largest protected area, preserves ancient forests and hosts the Nestinari fire-dancing ritual.
